Ivey Ray Mauney

November 24, 1921 - June 09, 2016

Ivey Ray Mauney

Ivey Ray Mauney, 94, passed away peacefully at Savannah Square in Savannah, Georgia on Jun 9, 2016. Born in Blacksburg, South Carolina on November 24, 1921, Ray Mauney will be remembered for the love of his family, dedication and commitment to the Railway industry, and especially as a prolific storyteller of his days in the U.S. Army during World War II or recounting the events of his years with Norfolk Southern Railway. Anyone visiting or meeting Ray Mauney was captured by the graphic detail and his inflective voice as he carried the listener through one story which, more often than not, led to another.

Ray served his country during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1946. He served as a Locomotive Engineer with the 719th Railway Operations Battalion, Third U.S. Army, under General George Patton. He was in the campaigns in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the American Theatre Service Medal, EAMET Campaign Medal with Four Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and Meritorious Unit Award.

Ray worked for Norfolk Southern for 45 years in roles that included Track Laborer and Station Hand, Shipping Clerk, Signal Helper, Locomotive Fireman, Locomotive Engineer, Road Foreman of Engines, and General Road Foreman. He concluded his career as Norfolk Southern’s System General Road Foreman, overseeing all train handling through the System. Ray was a Mason and Shriner

Ray is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Ellen Hamrick Mauney, his parents, Corbett and Willie Belle McKinney Mauney, and brother, Corbett Max Mauney. He is survived by his daughter, Donna Ray Mauney South and her husband, John of Bluffton, South Carolina, two grandchildren, Lorri Ray South Ansari of Atlanta, Georgia, and Abigail Elaine South of Okatie, South Carolina, and one great-grandchild, Evelyn Elaine South.

The Funeral Service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church in Ellenboro, North Carolina, on Sunday, June 12 at 4:00 p.m. with the Reverend Michael Sepaugh and Dr. Wayne Blackwood presiding. Interment will follow the service at Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. Friends and family will be received prior to the service at 3:00 p.m., June 12 at Bethel Baptist Church’s Family Life Center.

In lieu of flowers, if friends choose, they may make contributions to the Bethel Baptist Church Family Life Center, P.O. Box 633, Ellenboro, North Carolina 28040.

I am sorry to hear of the passing of our dear friend "Captain Ray" Mauney. I really enjoyed the years I worked with "Captain Ray" in Atlanta. I am sorry I did not hear of his passing in time to attend his funeral. He was a great man. I don't believe I ever did see him really get upset.
